Moroccan authorities repress 2 peaceable demonstrations in El Aiun
Adala UK strongly condemns the means used by the Moroccan police to suppress two peaceable demonstrations in El Aiun on 15th and 22nd May. The violent interventions caused dozens of injuries, some of them serious.
The intervention on the 22nd May was directed at a group of Saharawi women in the La Porco neighbourhood of El Aiun. Among the victims was Nbghoha Souayah, who was beaten and sexually assaulted, as she later told members of Adala UK.
These violent interventions once again highlight the existence of a Moroccan policy of systematic repression of Saharawi citizens and the the expulsion of international observers.
What has happened on many occasions in occupied El Aiun and other cities in the occupied territories, calls for an international mechanism for the monitoring and protection of human rights in Western Sahara. Adala UK calls on the United Nations to accelerate the process of the decolonisation of Western Sahara and to create a mechanism to monitor and protect human rights.
Members of Adala UK visited several victims of the violent assaults on the demonstrations on the two above mentioned dates and were able to compile the following lists:
