5 year prison sentence for Saharawi political prisoner Elhaiba Moulay Kaiss
On 26th May 2014, the Court of Appeal in Agadir, Morocco, imposed a 5 year prison sentence on Elhaiba Moulay Kaiss, following an initial 1 year sentence on 20th March 2014, according to his family. Elhaiba Moulay Kaiss had been detained on 7th October 2013 in the city of Golmim in Southern Morocco.
This is the harshest sentence handed down to members of a group of young people who were arrested as a result of their participation in peaceable demonstrations in Golmim at the end of September 2013. The demonstrations highlighted the case of a young Saharawi man, Rashif Shin, who had been killed at the hand of Moroccan police that month.
Adala UK calls on the Moroccan authorities to free Elhaiba Moulay Kaiss and all other political prisoners.
