A delegation of the UN High Commission on Human Rights is currently visiting the Occupied Territories of Western Sahara in order to investigate human rights abuses committed in the territory by Morocco. During the visit, the delegation is meeting with several Saharawi human rights organsations. Some meetings with Saharawi NGOs were held this week at the house of well-known Saharawi activist Aminatu Haidar. The house was completely surrounded by Moroccan police who threw stones at the house and even at the UN vehicle. Eventually, the UN delegation was able to leave the house and return to their hotel. To coincide with the delegation, several demonstrations have been organised in the streets of El Aaiun to demand respect for human rights, the inclusion of a human rights monitoring mandate in MINURSO, the UN Mission in Western Sahara, and freedom for Saharawi political prisoners. These demonstrations are led by family members of political prisoners. Demonstrations are violently suppressed by the Moroccan forces. Adala UK members witnessed several attacks on demonstrators: “Today the Moroccan forces beat children, elderly people and women. Some demonstrators who were trying to run away were followed and detained.” Adala UK condemns the violence used by the Moroccan forces. This demonstrates once again how crucial it is to include a human rights monitoring mandate in MINURSO’s mission.
