{"id":870,"date":"2013-08-31T10:55:15","date_gmt":"2013-08-31T10:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adalauk.org\/?p=870"},"modified":"2013-08-31T10:55:15","modified_gmt":"2013-08-31T10:55:15","slug":"repression-of-peaceful-protests-in-el-aaiun-27th-august-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adalauk.org\/?p=870","title":{"rendered":"Repression of peaceful protests in El Aaiun, 27th August 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-frc3\/1175570_225946567560108_376342348_n.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"150\" \/>At 6.30pm on 27th August, the Saharawi population of El Aaiun organised a\u00a0large demonstration in the Semara Boulevard, one\u00a0of the city&#8217;s main streets, to coincide with the visit of\u00a0an EU delegation, headed up by Mr Jonathan Lis, deputy special rapporteur for human rights at the EU.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Protestors demanded an end to the Moroccan exploitation of natural resources in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.\u00a0They condemned the proposed new fishery agreement between the EU and Morocco, which would include\u00a0waters belonging to occupied Western Sahara, over\u00a0which Morocco\u00a0does not have\u00a0sovereignty. Therefore, the agreement would\u00a0constitute a violation of international law.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<!--more--><\/div>\n<div>The area where the demonstration took place and all streets leading to Semara Boulevard were completely blocked by Moroccan forces,\u00a0consisting of\u00a0policemen,\u00a0both uniformed and in civilian clothes, auxiliary forces, and police cars. After a few minutes, the Moroccan security forces started beating and kicking the demonstrators. This violent intervention led to severe injuries for dozens of peaceful Saharawi demonstrators.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Adala UK strongly condemns this violent intervention which we consider a\u00a0violation\u00a0of the right to freedom of opinion and expression as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
