{"id":6135,"date":"2025-10-20T22:31:33","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T22:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adalauk.org\/?p=6135"},"modified":"2025-10-20T22:40:43","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T22:40:43","slug":"adala-uk-urges-uk-government-to-recognise-western-saharas-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adalauk.org\/?p=6135","title":{"rendered":"Adala UK Urges the UK to Recognise the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>London, 20 October 2025<\/strong>&nbsp;The British human rights organisation&nbsp;<em>Adala UK<\/em>&nbsp;has called on Prime Minister&nbsp;<strong>Keir Starmer<\/strong>&nbsp;to take a principled stand in support of international law by recognising the&nbsp;<strong>Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)<\/strong>, as Morocco\u2019s occupation of Western Sahara reaches its 50th year.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/adalauk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Letter-to-Prime-Minister-UK.pdf\"><strong>letter<\/strong><\/a> addressed to the Prime Minister, Adala UK welcomed the government\u2019s recent decision to recognise the State of Palestine  describing it as a\u00a0<em>\u201ccourageous and moral step\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and urged similar action in support of the\u00a0<strong>Saharawi people\u2019s right to self-determination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Forgotten Conflict Approaches Its 50th Year<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, has been occupied by Morocco since 1975, despite a ruling by the&nbsp;<strong>International Court of Justice (ICJ)<\/strong>&nbsp;that neither Morocco nor Mauritania had any legitimate claim to sovereignty over the territory. The Court affirmed that the Saharawi people have an inalienable right to decide their own future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half a century later, that right remains unfulfilled. More than&nbsp;<strong>170,000 Saharawi refugees<\/strong>&nbsp;still live in camps in south-western Algeria, dependent on humanitarian assistance, while those living under Moroccan control face restrictions on freedom of expression, discrimination in employment and housing, and violent repression of peaceful protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Human Rights and Resource Exploitation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>International human rights experts have repeatedly raised concerns over Morocco\u2019s human rights record in the occupied territory. Reports from UN bodies and NGOs document&nbsp;<strong>arbitrary detentions, forced evictions, and harassment of journalists and activists<\/strong>&nbsp;advocating for Saharawi rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Morocco continues to&nbsp;<strong>extract and export Western Sahara\u2019s natural resources<\/strong>&nbsp; including phosphates, fish, sand, and renewable energy  in violation of international law. The exploitation of these resources, Adala UK noted,&nbsp;<em>\u201cfuels the occupation and deprives the Saharawi people of their own economic and cultural sovereignty.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Reversal of UK Policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK expressed deep concern over the UK government\u2019s recent endorsement of Morocco\u2019s \u201cautonomy plan\u201d, announced by then Foreign Secretary&nbsp;<strong>David Lammy<\/strong>&nbsp;in June 2025. The plan grants limited local administrative powers to the Saharawi people but leaves Morocco in control of sovereignty, defence, and foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis position represents a significant reversal of the UK\u2019s historic commitment to the Saharawi people\u2019s right to a free and fair referendum,\u201d the organisation said. \u201cBy endorsing Morocco\u2019s plan, the UK risks legitimising an illegal occupation and undermining international law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consistency with Britain\u2019s Principles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK drew clear parallels between the situations in&nbsp;<strong>Palestine<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Western Sahara<\/strong>, describing both as struggles for self-determination under prolonged occupation. The organisation argued that the principles underpinning the UK\u2019s recognition of Palestine  the defence of international law, opposition to occupation, and support for human rights must also apply to Western Sahara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBritain has shown leadership by recognising the State of Palestine.
