In&nbsp;<strong>April 2025<\/strong>, she joined other UN experts in a formal communication to the Moroccan government, detailing grave concerns over a&nbsp;<strong>sustained campaign of intimidation<\/strong>, surveillance, harassment, and judicial abuse targeting Sahrawi human rights defenders, journalists, and advocates for the Sahrawi people\u2019s right to self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the cases highlighted was that of&nbsp;<strong>Ali Salem Tamek<\/strong>, a senior member of&nbsp;<strong>CODESA<\/strong>&nbsp;(Sahrawi Collective of Human Rights Defenders), who remains under constant police surveillance and faces restrictions on his freedom of movement and assembly. The same communication denounced defamatory campaigns against Tamek and other Sahrawi defenders, alongside a broader strategy by Moroccan authorities to delegitimize activists by portraying them as \u201cforeign agents\u201d\u2014a narrative that fosters hostility and justifies repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Worsening Pattern of Repression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK has long documented and condemned Morocco\u2019s ongoing violations of fundamental rights in Western Sahara. These include the&nbsp;<strong>use of force against peaceful protestors<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>arbitrary detentions<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>travel bans<\/strong>, and the&nbsp;<strong>criminalisation of civil society activity<\/strong>. Over the years, Moroccan authorities have repeatedly blocked access to Western Sahara for&nbsp;<strong>international observers, journalists, and human rights delegations<\/strong>\u2014a clear attempt to silence voices and hide abuses from the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK has documented numerous cases of expulsions and denied entry to international human rights defenders attempting to access the occupied territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This incident occurred during one of the visits of Adala UK\u2019s president to Western Sahara. During a peaceful demonstration in El Aaiun,\u00a0<strong>Mr. Sidi Ahmed<\/strong>\u00a0was physically assaulted by Moroccan security forces. The organisation strongly condemned this violent and unprovoked attack, expressing full solidarity with Mr. Sidi Ahmed and all victims of Moroccan brutality. Adala UK continues to call on the Moroccan government to\u00a0<strong>cease its attacks on peaceful demonstrators<\/strong>\u00a0and to allow international observers access to monitor the situation on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Urgency of International Responsibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For Adala UK, Mary Lawlor\u2019s public condemnation is a crucial affirmation of what Sahrawi defenders have endured for decades:&nbsp;<strong>systematic repression under occupation<\/strong>, with little recourse to justice or international protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK emphasises that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certain that in Morocco there\u2019s a Parliament, a judicial system and a Government, but there\u2019s no separation of powers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lack of institutional independence allows Morocco to operate with impunity in the occupied territories.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK is therefore calling for&nbsp;<strong>concrete action<\/strong>&nbsp;from the international community and the UN system. The time for statements alone has passed. There must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>independent international investigation<\/strong>\u00a0into all acts of\u00a0<strong>violence, intimidation, arbitrary detention and harassment<\/strong>\u00a0targeting Sahrawi human rights defenders;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accountability<\/strong>\u00a0for those responsible, including legal action through the Moroccan judicial system, where possible, or international mechanisms where national remedies have failed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immediate access for international observers<\/strong>, journalists and humanitarian organisations to Western Sahara;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And clear pressure from Morocco\u2019s allies\u2014including the\u00a0<strong>United Kingdom<\/strong>\u2014to demand respect for international human rights norms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standing with Defenders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adala UK reaffirms its&nbsp;<strong>unwavering support<\/strong>&nbsp;for all Sahrawi human rights defenders. We remind the Moroccan government and the broader international community that these courageous individuals are not criminals or agents of division\u2014they are&nbsp;<strong>the last line of defence<\/strong>&nbsp;for justice, dignity, and the rule of law in the occupied territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Mary Lawlor rightly noted, the world cannot remain indifferent.
