We work in close partnership with Saharawi human rights defenders to bring first-hand evidence of repression to public attention and to advocate for justice through international legal and diplomatic channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<strong>April 2025<\/strong>, the UK Government announced a troubling shift in policy, expressing support for Morocco\u2019s 2007 \u201cautonomy proposal\u201d as the&nbsp;<em>\u201cmost credible, viable and pragmatic basis\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;for resolving the conflict in Western Sahara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new position marks a significant departure from decades of UK and United Nations policy, which have consistently supported a political process that includes the Saharawi people&#8217;s right to determine their own future\u2014<strong>including the option of independence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Violation of International Law<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK\u2019s support for Morocco\u2019s plan directly contradicts Article 1 of the UN Charter, numerous UN resolutions, and the 1975 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, all of which affirm the Saharawi people\u2019s right to self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Undermining the UN Peace Process<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>By aligning with one side of the dispute, the UK undermines the credibility of the UN-led negotiations, which were designed to deliver a fair and democratic referendum on the territory\u2019s final status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inconsistent with UK Policy Elsewhere<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK has upheld the right to self-determination for the people of Scotland, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands. It is unacceptable to deny the same principle to the Saharawi people under Moroccan occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Dangerous Global Precedent<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If geopolitical interests override international law in Western Sahara, it weakens the UK\u2019s ability to defend its own territorial positions and opens the door to selective, politically motivated applications of international norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Demands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We call on Members of Parliament and the Foreign, Commonwealth &amp; Development Office to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Reaffirm the UK\u2019s support for a UN-led political process<\/strong>&nbsp;that includes a legally recognised right to self-determination for the Saharawi people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Withdraw explicit endorsement of Morocco\u2019s autonomy plan<\/strong>&nbsp;until a credible and inclusive referendum has been held.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support the establishment of an independent human rights monitoring mechanism<\/strong>&nbsp;in Western Sahara.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advocate for renewed diplomatic engagement<\/strong>, including the appointment of a new UN envoy with a clear mandate and timetable for resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take Action: Write to Your MP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your voice can make a difference.
