{"id":5593,"date":"2019-03-16T00:31:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-16T00:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adalauk.org\/?p=5593"},"modified":"2019-03-16T00:38:36","modified_gmt":"2019-03-16T00:38:36","slug":"south-africa-brief-media-sadc-solidarity-conference-western-sahara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adalauk.org\/?p=5593","title":{"rendered":"News: South Africa to brief media about SADC Solidarity Conference on Western Sahara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Johannesburg, South Africa (ADV) \u2013\u00a0South Africa\u2019s International Relations and Cooperation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu will next week on Tuesday, brief members\u00a0of the media on\u00a0the\u00a0state of readiness for the SADC Solidarity Conference\u00a0with the Saharawi Arab Democratic\u00a0Republic \/ Western Sahara.<\/p>\n<p>Early this month,\u00a0the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) announced that\u00a0South Africa and Namibia will co-host the SADC Solidarity Conference on Western Sahara, scheduled for 25-26 March 2019 in Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>During a debate on the State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the Solidarity Conference will be \u201cin support of the struggle of the Saharawi people against the colonial occupation of their territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former Spanish colony, Western Sahara was annexed by Morocco in 1975. Since then it has been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Morocco and its indigenous Saharawi people, led by the Polisario Front.<\/p>\n<p>Western Sahara is a sparsely-populated area of mostly desert situated on the northwest coast of Africa and home to phosphate reserves and rich fishing grounds off its coast.
